Jules Crittenden, a city editor and columnist for the Boston Herald, has a long post today on his "forward movement" blog explaining why he plans to dial back - strongly - on his online commitments.
It's a pity - I enjoy his blog, even while I don't always agree with his arguments. Of course, I don't always agree with my arguments either, but that's another issue. Crittenden makes a very good case, though, for taking some time to step back and away from it and think about...other things:
I’m just cranking it down for the summer. I live in a very nice part of the world, and intend to be out in it. There is an ocean nearby and mountains not too far away. I have a dog to walk, three kids to play with, a shed to shingle and 9 doors to paint. There are other projects I have been unable to tackle due to the inexorable draw of this nothingness, and there are other places I need my mind to be than in this echo chamber.
Speaking as somebody who's now working on setting up a second blog (more about that soon), I can appreciate where he's coming from. I hope he enjoys the smell of the roses. And I hope - and trust - that he'll eventually come back refreshed.

Just as Jules is dialing it back, I'm dialing it up....I noticed today that Seth Godin blogs daily, and he's the #1 marketing blogger, from what I gather. I see you too blog almost daily....maybe there's a blog about how to keep from burning out on blogs?
I appreciate your remarks about my Daily Dog essay last month...I too have seen reporters really botch things by acting like a self-righteous bull in a china shop. Conjuring memories of Rodney King: Can't we all just get along?

Matt, there's a perfect example of what we're both talking about at http://shankman.com/how-not-to-introduce-yourself-to-me/ . PR guy Peter Shankman runs a website, HARO (Help a Reporter Out) which tries to help reporters by passing along their queries to thousands of PR people who may be able to answer them. It's a free service for all concerned. Follow that link to see how one reporter, when signing up, managed to play self-righteous bull...
