Learning from the Crowd

One of the great things about the Social Media Club is being able to take advantage of "the wisdom of crowds." At most of the meetings I have attended, everyone is invited to share some website, book, idea, article - something that others may find useful or entertaining.

Here are some of the ideas to come out of the most recent get-together in New York. I know I've missed some - everyone had lots of suggestions. If I've missed some, please feel free to jump in and add something to the comments.

BizRiskAdvice.com - a site pupt together by a number of people from different professions. A professional insurance person, an HR specialist, etc., provide advice to the business owner.

TripIt.com, a travel site that makes planning and tracking your travel easier. Howard Greenstein describes it as a kind of travel agency using your friends as its resource.

UpNext.com, a social media site based on map technology. As you move over the map and roll over individual buildings, you can see wherre there may be events, friends, tenants, and other information.

Yahoo Pipes, now in beta, described as a good way to monitor traditional and online media.

WOMMA (Word of Mouth Marketing Association) newsletters - available for subscription.

Web-strategist.com, a blog devoted to social media strategy in the corporate environment.

DeskHappy, a new app that pushes video reminders to computer users that they ought to do something other than just stare at the computer screen.

Mint.com, a web app to manage peresonal finances. Several people had experience with this - the consensus appears to be that it needs work, particularly in privacy and security areas, but shows promise.

Bokardo, a social media design site.

Chris Heuer recommends Xobni, GetSatisfaction.com,and Microsoft's PopFly, which he says is like Yahoo Pipes, but easier to use, making it easier for non-programmers to crreat apps. Also likes Doppler.

There was a lot more, but you get the idea. Here's another one: why not check out the SMC events page for upcoming club events in your area - and join, so that you can share your ideas with the rest of us?

Just a thought.
